ABIM Announces Immediate Changes to MOC Program

The American Board of Internal Medicine on Feb. 3 announced significant changes to its Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. The changes are detailed in ABIM’s announcement.

SLMMS has voiced opposition to mandatory MOC and the time and costs associated with recertification requirements. The December 2013 issue St. Louis Metropolitan Medicine published a Q&A with Dr. Richard Baron, president and CEO of the ABIM. SLMMS member Dr. Helen Gelhot introduced a resolution opposing mandatory MOC at the 2014 MSMA annual convention, and has helped keep the debate alive at the state level. She summarized this work and called for action in a story published in the December 2014 St. Louis Metropolitan Medicine.

This change in position by the ABIM is in response to direct pressure from the physician community. It’s gratifying to see that our efforts, combined with those of so many others, have begun to yield results.

This is an example of the added value of your SLMMS membership.-
