About Us

The St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society is the voice for thousands of medical and osteopathic physicians in the city of St. Louis and St. Louis County. Founded in 1836, we are one of the oldest local medical societies in the United States.

We support member physicians through continuing medical education as well as professional networking plus a variety of other special services.  We assure that the physician’s voice is heard in the formation and adoption of state legislation affecting medicine. We speak out on public health issues including COVID-19 safety. We also represent medicine in critical issues involving managed-care and third-party payers. We are the largest component society of the Missouri State Medical Association, which in turn is affiliated with the American Medical Association.

History

The St. Louis Medical Society was founded on January 7, 1836. Soon the Society became an advocate for quality medicine. Accomplishments included establishing a medical faculty at Saint Louis University, providing rotating professional staff for city hospitals, working to improve public sanitation and sewers and removing city hospitals from political control. A medical library was established in 1869 which became part of the Medical Society’s majestic building that opened in 1926 at 3839 Lindell Blvd. In 1905, the St. Louis County Medical Society was founded; it merged with the St. Louis Medical Society in 1979 to form the St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society. After almost 80 years on Lindell, the Society moved its headquarters to Creve Coeur in 2005 to be located closer to the majority of member physicians. The Medical Society today continues as a strong advocate for medicine, and the physician-patient relationship.
