Statement on Wearing Face Masks to Prevent COVID-19 Spread
The St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society (SLMMS) stands in support with our government agencies, businesses and community organizations that have implemented policies to require the wearing of face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that people wear face coverings in public settings when social distancing cannot be adequately achieved. As physicians, we acknowledge the experts who have determined that face masks can be effective in reducing the spread of COVID-19.
A carrier may or may not show COVID-19 symptoms, but can spread the virus to others even if he or she does not feel sick. The face covering is intended to protect others in case the wearer is infected. The mask should be worn properly covering both the nose and the mouth.
SLMMS strongly encourages the wearing of masks in public, as well as maintaining social distancing, avoiding all unnecessary close contact, washing hands frequently, and remaining alert for any symptoms. If we all join together to help slow the spread, the sooner our communities can overcome the COVID-19 threat.
