St. Louis County Approves Tobacco 21 Measure

The St. Louis County Council on Sept. 6 enacted a “Tobacco 21” measure banning sales of tobacco products to persons under the age of 21. The measure goes into effect Dec. 1.

The bill was sponsored by Second District Councilman and Medical Society member Sam Page, MD.

Columbia, Mo., and 18 Kansas City-area cities already have Tobacco 21 ordinances in place.

Health advocates believe that Tobacco 21 ordinances are an effective strategy to reduce smoking, since most smokers start as teenagers.
